I Love Socks

by Judith Bakkensen

Yesterday I knitted my first sock.  It took me all day.  As I knitted I thought about the millions of socks women have knitted throughout history.  And what about the foot coverings created by the first people to protect their feet.  Could our brains have evolved even more quickly because we had to create coverings for our feet to leave Africa?   Just look at the foot.  It has complex angles and curves.  It's not easy to knit a sock.  It must have been very hard to create a covering that would stay on these funny-shaped things on the ends of our legs.  Then to make another one just like it for the other foot.

I love socks.  These creations that help us move quickly through the world and keep our feet warm and dry.  If I could have socks in every shade of purple, I would.  Now I just have to knit the second sock.
